RETURN HOME

Attack of the Clones: After meeting with Queen Jamillia, Padmé and Anakin return to Padmé’s home where he meets her family. To travel through the streets of Theed while remaining inconspicuous, she wears a long, hooded cloak.  When she arrives home, Padme’s removes the cloak to reveal an outfit quite different from her rigid political robes.  The relaxed blue outfit spoke of the weight that had been lifted from Padme’s shoulders and was an example of her finally being allowed to be herself and dress for herself.

Design: In designing Padmé’s more casual costumes for AotC, concept artist Dermot Power was instructed to create costumes for Padmé that showcased her transformation into a beautiful young woman.  They needed to be “sexy, but not crude.”  His inspiration for this costume came from the 1920s fashion illustrations by the artist Erté.

Though this costume did not make the final cut of Attack of the Clones, the hooded cloak for this gown was one of costume designer Trisha Biggar’s favorites. It was made from delicately devoréd panne velvet, with full sleeves and a vintage clasp as a fastener. The accompanying skirt is a hipster wrapover skirt that fastens on Padmé’s left side. The matching top is decorated by tiny vintage shells, and filigree leaf-shaped dress clips at the front. The top also features back-button detail and shoulder blades of the same color and material as the headband. The headband itself is teal aluminum decorated with a raised complex geometric pattern.

I’m on the edge of glory,
and I’m hanging on a moment of truth
Out on the edge of glory,
and I’m hanging on a moment with you

because I have WAY too many feelings about genderbent Star Wars… more Rule 63 Anakin and Padme drawings, this time just on Episode II because this movie had some wonderfully vivid scenes, and the “Edge of Glory” (both the song and phrase) evokes a lot of the feeling and themes I get from it….
